The terms ADD and ADHD were not always used to describe these medical disorders. In fact, it wasn’t until 1980 that the term “ADD” was coined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) in 1980. Before this, it was called “Hyperkinetic Reaction of Childhood” in the DSM-II.
